Unlike Windows users who have been served a single desktop, users of a GNU / Linux distribution have a choice in what kind of environment they want to work. There are simultaneously multiple desktops and user can change them from the login screen. Little explanation would be helpful, Linux is the kernel ( little piece of software ) which manages everything from memory managment to scheduling of processes and so on.
A desktop environment represent an interface which role is to talk with the kernel which in turn talks to the hardware. Examples of desktop environments would be Unity, GNOME, KDE, XFCE etc. GNU / linux distribution ( called distro for short ) is a complete operating system which contains the linux kernel and other applications (along the desktop environment) that uses the kernel to run. Examples of Linux distributions are: Ubuntu, RedHat, Suse, Debian, Fedora,Debian and so on.

Unity
This desktop environment certainly is known to many, given that Ubuntu is one of the most popular distributions. Unity provides users search right on board and soldering applications in the left lane. Although the environment maintain a good balance between modernistic looks and practicality.The big difference to most other desktop environment is that it offers a side panel called Launcher, similar to the Favorites menu in Gnome 3. Another part that might be interesting is the system menu with integrated online search.
GNOME
Before Ubuntu to start with his own personal desktop environment, GNOME 2.x standard was used on that distribution, as well as Fedora, Debian and some other distributions. But after GNOME decided to develop the new Shell interface, some of them took away from this desktop. Many applications designed around the Gnome 3 desktop environment suffer from a significant degradation in visibility and usability, example of this is the Documents program, which is just an empty gray screen with borders.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a working environment that would match the users who just made the transition from Windows to GNU / Linux. Cinnamon is based on GNOME 3 that are trying to keep the traditional look of the desktop. Includes Taskbar, menus and similar applications, also it is quite stable and not hungry for resources.
Cinnamon comes with the classic deksatop layout, similar to KDE and Windows environment. There is the classic menu, open windows and system area of the one bottom panel, which seems to be most efficient layout for most users of conventional computer devices.
KDE
KDE perhaps most closely resembles the desktop of Windows. Along with GNOME, they are leading desktops environment to Linux, while KDE itself offers more options and opportunities. KDE 4 comes with several desktop widgets that can be placed further and the working environment is very expandable. KDE programs use different file manager, viewer and so on , compared to GNOME and Unity. Performance is solid, but the resource usage is higher than Gnome. KDE components can be buggy sometimes, and you will often encountered crashing applications when using the desktop environment. Despite possible bugginess, user canget an absolute freedom in tweaking desktop any way they like. KDE can be modified to look like any other desktop environment, and it can emulate Windows behavior very well.
Xfce
Xfce is one of the “lighter” desktops that you can use on weaker machines. This is one of the desktop environments that currently most resembles how GNOME was before.
Xfce uses its own programs, file manager, code editor, image viewer. Even there are common programs with Unity and GNOME, not always they will be able to work on one of these desktops. Xfce is recommended for older computers without stable graphics driver that can not support the effects of Unity and GNOME.
